You are helping Georgina and her Research Team navigate the Open Research Landscape, ensuring that they can meet best practice for research!
In order to be successful in your Research Quest, you will need to help Georgina and her Team meet funder requirements, but also publish their research for the greatest impact and reach!
You will need to become Open Research Champions!
But there are many perils ahead, including Data Gremlins, Publishing Dragons and being locked behind Fortress Paywall!
[[Are you Ready?->Let's Begin...!]]In order to start their Research Quest, Georgina and her Team will need to secure funding from the Funding Wizards.
The Funding Wizards require a Data Management Plan, but what should be included?
[[A description of the data being collected and how it will be organised, stored, and shared across the life of the project]]
[[A description of the data being collected and a statement that no data will be shared openly at project completion]]The Funding Wizards were impressed by Georgina and her Team's well-thought through Data Management Plan.
They have been awarded funding and can continue on their Research Quest!
[[Sensitive Data Ahead!]]The Funding Wizards were not happy with the lack of consideration and information for data management at each stage of the project, and that none of the data would be shared, despite mandates to share some of the data.
Georgina and her Team were unsuccessful in their funding bid, and will need to begin their Research Quest again
[[Untitled Passage]] Georgina and her Team will be collecting data that contains personal information. Some of the data could also have commercial value (for the development of potions). They may also have multiple versions of the same dataset.
How should they proceed?
[[Keep the data on removable media and make many copies in case it gets lost]]
[[Keep the data on encrypted servers, make multiple copies and use file-naming convention and version control]]
[[Attack of the Data Gremlins!]]Georgina and her team thwarted the Data Gremlins who tried to sabotage their research by organising their data and storing it securely!
[[Sharing Data - Using the Institutional Research Data Repository]]OH NO!
Data Gremlins have taken advantage of the confusion and lack of security to steal Georgina's sensitive data!
Return to the Last Part of the Journey!
[[Sensitive Data Ahead!]] Georgina and her Team have completed their data collection, and are ready to share parts of their datasets to meet the mandates of the Funding Wizards.
What should they do?
[[Deposit shareable data in the Institutional Research Data Repository]]
[[It is best not to share any data - It can be used for future research! Keep the data on an encrypted hard drive in a locked cabinet]]
Once again, Georgina and her Team have managed to foil the Data Gremlins, this time by ensuring that they can meet their funder mandates for data sharing while at the same time ensuring that data which cannot be shared openly can be stored securely and be potentially accessible to researchers following secure access procedures.
Well done!
You have helped Georgina and her Team manage their Data Successfully, but can you
[[Help Them Publish]]
You will need to keep your wits about you! Outwit the Publishing Dragon and avoid being locked up in Fortress Paywall!
Although Georgina has kept their data safe, it is not accessible to researchers and there is a risk the data could be lost to the sands of time.
The Data Gremlins can still be defeated by planning for long term stewardship of the data!”
[[Sharing Data - Using the Institutional Research Data Repository]] Everyone has brought a specific skill to the Open Research quest – what a great team! How should this be recorded on the manuscript?
[[Everyone is in the author list & importance is highlighted by where you are in the order.]]
[[Everyone’s specific contribution will be indicated on the publication.]]
This doesn't seem right - Why not?
[[Help Them Publish]]While having everyone’s name in a list on the paper might seem like it’s enough, acknowledging the individuals’ roles will help make everyone’s expertise more visible.
The CRediT – Contributor Roles Taxonomy (niso.org) is used by many publishers and provides a widely agreed list of roles that you can use.
As well as using CRediT, remember to deploy everyone’s ORCID identifier to help distinguish each other.
Georgina and her Team can continue on their quest to publish their research!
Move on to follow the [[Green Open Access Publishing]]!
They are keen to make their research paper available for all to read. They can put the accepted version of their manuscript in the Library repository SORA (St George's Online Research Archive, our institutional open access publications repository). Is this a good idea?
[[Yes, that’s a good place for it - it will be made open access and it’s a secure place]]
[[There might be a way they can make the published version open access and have this in the institutional repository – should they investigate this?]]
The repository is a good place – it’s free and straightforward to upload your manuscript. But the Publishing Dragon isn’t going to make it easy for you! He won’t allow you to make your accepted version accessible for another 12 months!
Make sure you’ve considered all the different routes before going on with your journey, especially if you have a Funding Wizard who requires open access publishing.
Return to [[Green Open Access Publishing]]You’ve heard that the Publishing Dragon requires much gold to make your paper open access to all. There might be a better way of making the publisher version available immediately open access without paying that greedy dragon. Visit the Open Access Oracle to find out more!
Move on to find the Open Access Oracle and the [[Gold Open Access Route]]The Open Access Oracle tells them that they may be able to publish open access without having to hand over any gold to the Publishing Dragon. What should they do?
[[They’re in a hurry – they should just agree to pay whatever the Dragon demands.]]
[[They should pause a moment and speak to the Oracle to find a deal or get advice on how to fund any open access charges before agreeing to the Dragon’s terms. ]]
Argghh! They’ve parted with a lot of gold when they didn’t need to!
Return to [[Gold Open Access Route]] The Open Access Oracle directs them to the information they need to find out about the journals in the deals, and is ready to help answer their questions. They work out their options and publish their article open access!
You have helped Georgina and Her Team succeed at managing their research data and publishing their research Open Access!
On this Quest, you have become Open Research Champions!
[[Congratulations!!]]This quest is a simplified version of your possible journey to open access publication!
